Alva is a quiet, rural community in northeast Lee County along the Caloosahatchee River, about 20 miles east of downtown Fort Myers. Considered Lee County’s oldest settlement, Alva retains much of its Old Florida character, with large-acreage properties, farms, horse properties, mature oak trees and low-density neighborhoods. Historic landmarks include its 1909 library and 1901 chapel, now part of a community museum preserving the area’s pioneer history.

The river and surrounding natural areas are central to life in Alva. Boating, fishing and kayaking are popular, while nearby Caloosahatchee Regional Park and Hickey’s Creek Mitigation Park provide opportunities for hiking, horseback riding and wildlife viewing. Commercial development within the community remains relatively limited.

As eastern Lee County continues to grow, preserving Alva’s rural character, agricultural lands, natural resources and low-density development pattern are important community planning issues.
